In 1672, Minister Colbert came to study the renovation of the port of Dieppe. Its reputation as a privateer port led to its destruction by the English fleet in 1694. The engineer De Ventabren initiated works further improved and enlarged by Vauban on the orders of Louis XIV. The port of Pollet was later divided into two parts by a desilting channel, and three new basins were added between 1800 and 1880. Dieppe became a port mainly dedicated to coal and oil until the end of WWI. Today, it revolves around four main activities: car ferries across the Channel, trade, fishing, and yachting.
