A narrow bridge with a double chapel

Famous because incomplete and popularized by a 15th-century rhyme, Saint-Bénézet bridge known as the Pont d'Avignon surprises by its small width - less than 9.8 ft (3 m) - still narrowed almost by half by the Provencal Romanesque style chapel located between its second and third arches. This chapel - dedicated to Saint Bénézet for its lower part located just above the waters of the Rhône and to Saint Nicolas, patron saint of boatmen, for its upper part - is built on two floors. Access to the lower chapel is via an outside staircase.
