Vines were already growing around Riquewihr in Roman times. They have always benefited from its hills' sun exposure and its protected geographical location. Despite the wars of the Middle Ages, the village developed, and its wines grew famous. Riquewihr also escaped the tumults of World War Two, and its medieval heritage passed down almost intact. Its half-timbered houses make the village a bridge between the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and Alsatian tradition.
