A bridge dedicated to Édouard Daladier

While the famous Saint-Bénézet bridge (background) dates from the 12th century, the Édouard Daladier bridge (foreground) constitutes a recent work long-awaited by the riverside inhabitants of the Rhône that it crosses by spanning the island of Barthelasse in Avignon. Its construction began at the end of August 1955, and the bridge was inaugurated on June 21, 1961. It bears the name of Édouard Daladier (1884-1970), former mayor of Avignon (1953-1958), deputy of Vaucluse (1946-1958), Minister (1924-1940), and President of the Council of the French Third Republic.
