It is called the Lantern of God with its 1.6 acres (6,500m²) of stained glass. Saint Stephen Cathedral in Metz displays three periods of stained glass work. Hermann of Münster, who crafted the large rose window, was a master of Gothic art. Three contemporary artists, Pierre Gaudin, Jacques Villon, and Roger Bissière, contributed to the colors of the monument in the 20th century. Marc Chagall's dreamlike stained-glass windows, inspired by the Old Testament, completed this quest for illumination. Metz Cathedral establishes a bridge of lights between old and modern generations of artists.
