The only land tortoise in mainland France, the Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni) is a reptile that measures 5.9 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm) in length as an adult. It is identifiable by the horny claw marking the tip of its tail, the yellow-orange and black patterns on the back of its shell, and the two regular black bands crossing its plastron from its head to its tail.
