In the centre of the picture, a Schneider Schulgleiter SG-38 training glider built in 1938 for the training of Luftwaffe pilots. Very light, the glider was launched by bungee cord from a sloping hill for a flight of a few tens of seconds. The apprentice pilot was alone on board and immediately confronted with the lift and steering. The SG-38 is the most widely built beam glider of the 20th century, with nearly 10,000 built. Nowadays, the SG-38 is still very popular in Germany and many replicas still fly in flying clubs.
