Ocher is the natural pigment of a rock composed of clay and iron oxide which contains 80% of quartz sand. Its color varies from yellow to purple depending on the percentage of iron hydroxide. Extremely resistant, as evidenced by the prehistoric traces of its use in caves like that of Lascaux in the Dordogne department, ocher is a non-toxic material.
