A providential lighthouse

The Goury lighthouse stands 874 yards (800 m) from Cap de la Hague on a rock called Le Gros du Raz, always beaten by a white swell that indicates an area of dangerous currents. The infamous Raz Blanchard submerged 27 ships in one year before the construction of the lighthouse in 1834. The work took three years for the workers who resided on the islet at the risk of their lives. The lighthouse consists of granite blocks from Dielette and is 170 ft high (52 m). During World War II, it was extinguished by the Germans, who placed explosives at its base. The Goury lighthouse was listed as a Historical Monument in 2009.
