Its population of 22,992 inhabitants only places Manosque 396th among cities in France and 35th in the South region. It is, on the other hand, the most populous city in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Its population of 7,750 inhabitants in 1954 increased sharply from the 1960s-1970s due to two simultaneous phenomena. In the same period, Manosque saw the arrival of numerous repatriates from Algeria (pieds-noirs and Harkis) and the establishment of the Atomic Energy Commission in Cadarache. Since the early 2000s, the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) project has given the city a new impetus.
