Rocamadour has been a place of pilgrimage since 1166, when the intact body of Saint Amadour was discovered. He was a hermit who would also have sculpted a supposedly miraculous statue of the Black Virgin. From then on, a sanctuary with seven chapels rose above the village's houses. Pilgrims climb there through a staircase with 216 steps, sometimes on their knees. They often deposit ex-votos thanking God for curing their diseases. The Grand Pardon de Rocamadour, a jubilee tradition since 1428, takes place in the years when John the Baptist's day, June 24, coincides with Corpus Christi. The next venue of this event, which attracts a considerable crowd, will take place in 2083.
