The land of forests

Present for more than 7,000 years, the forests have given its name to the Jura, which means “land of forests”. The limestone massif of the region comprises some imposing summits like the Crêt de la Neige (5,643 ft / 1,720 m), the Crêt Pela (4,904 ft / 1,495 m), and the Crêt de Chalam (5,068 ft / 1,545 m). The Jura Regional Nature Park also shows deep gorges dug by rivers (like the Valserine) in a karstic environment. Next to Switzerland, hundreds of smuggling paths crisscross small villages like Septmoncel les Molunes.
