Built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Alsace plain at an altitude of over 2,460 ft (750m), the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle stands guard between the Vosges and the Black Forest. The two mountainous massifs, a geological counterpart of the other, share similar natural characteristics. Spruce, fir, and beech forests dominate the landscape on both sides. Spruce and black pine are the most common varieties due to their massive establishment after World War II.
