The Palais des Papes in Avignon is a monumental building from the 14th century divided into several parts. The Palais Vieux was erected under Pope Benedict XII (1334-1342) around the Pope's Tower or Angels' Tower, a 150-ft (46 m) keep supported by thick buttresses and pierced with narrow openings. The Palais Neuf built under Clément VI (1342-1352) includes the 2,788 square feet (820 square meters) Grand Audience and the main courtyard. The Palais Vieux concentrated the most important activities and housed the private apartments of the supreme pontiff, the library, the administration, and finances, while the Palais Neuf hosted the officialities (audiences, judgments) and festivities.
