The Fort des Salettes, or redoute des Salettes, is part of the first-category fortifications of the 14th military region of Briançon. It is a fortified infantry structure placed below the Toulouse cross at an altitude of 4,757 ft (1,450 m) to lock the road to Italy and protect the castle it dominates. The original artillery redoubt, defended with rifles and designed according to Vauban's plans, was transformed in 1844 at the instigation of General Haxo.
