A protohistoric Aquitaine oppidum
0
0
North of the Gers department, the French municipality of Lectoure has been occupied since prehistoric times and has a rich history. It later housed a Gallic oppidum, a Gallo-Roman city, and the former capital of the Counts of Armagnac. During Antiquity, Lactora was a protohistoric Aquitaine oppidum and the capital of the Lactorates. Contrary to its warlike neighbors, the local chief quickly allied with the Romans. Lactora then became one of the twelve civitates of Novempopulanie, the name given to ancient Aquitaine.
