A name referring to a sacred source

The toponym Vaison that appeared in 1169 finds its origin in the pre-Celtic vas (source), to which the suffix -io was added, suggesting a sacred source at the origin of the foundation of the city. The town to the south of the Popes' enclave previously appeared as Vasio Vocontiorum in the first century AD, Pago Vasionense in 815, and Vaiso in 1081. Vaison became Vaison-la-Romaine in 1924 in reference to the many Roman remains it contains.
