The cicada is a heterometabolic insect (of which only the last metamorphosis is complete) of the Hemiptera order, which it shares with bedbugs, cochineals, or aphids. It is part of the Cicadidae family that counts more than 4,500 species worldwide. Its scientific name (Cicada) comes from the Greek kiccos (membrane) and ado (to sing). The most common species in southern France are the common cicada (Lyristes plebejus) and the gray cicada (Cicada orni) (photo).
