A watermill linked to Philippe Auguste
0
0
In 1204, King Philippe Auguste took Normandy over from the English. The sovereign later conceded the construction of a watermill on the Vieux-Pont of the 12th century that spans the Seine in Vernon. In the 18th century, six wheat mills were still operating in the area. In 1849, the construction of a dam downstream at Notre-Dame-de-l'Isle marked the end of the Vieux-Pont and the four remaining mills. Today, only a few rocks from the bridge and the old watermill remain.
