The monument to Vercingétorix of Alise-Sainte-Reine in the Côte-d'Or department is composed of a statue made by the sculptor Aimé Millet standing on a pedestal in Saulieu granite and Pouillenay stone executed on the drawings of the architect Viollet-le-Duc. The five-ton, 21.6 ft (6.60 m) tall hollow statue was made of beaten and spun copper sheet riveted to a metal frame. It was erected in August 1865 on the initiative of Napoleon III on the site of the oppidum dominating the battlefield of Alesia, which marked the defeat of the Gauls led by Vercingétorix against the Roman legions of Julius Caesar.
