Among the most remarkable elements of the Grand Place (main square) of Mirepoix, the Maison des Consuls particularly stands out with its curious figures carved into the wood. Arranged above the main beam, twenty-five modillions (ornaments) with sculpted ends in the shape of human or creature faces watch over passers-by. The Maison des Consuls has miraculously been preserved from numerous fires and time, and many sculptures are still remarkably well maintained.
