The first monastery of Saint-Honorat Island was founded around 400-410 by Honoratus of Arles, who quickly gathered around him a community with a life codified by the Rule of the Four Fathers. From the 5th and 6th centuries, the monastery enjoyed an exceptional influence and attracted numerous pilgrims. Many monks trained at the Lérins monastery ensured its fame and contributed to the Christianization of Provence. Saint Patrick would have studied there before undertaking the evangelization of Ireland. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries and later in the 19th century, the current buildings now house twenty-one Cistercian monks. They perpetuate a community way of life structured around the four founding principles of prayer, work, studies, and hospitality. Erected on the site of the original 12th-century monument, the main church of the Lérins monastery was consecrated in 1928.
