The manadier, from the Provençal term manadié, is the owner of a manade (bull herd). He oversees the daily activities of the herd, knows his animals, judges their value, selects them for the races, and manages their careers. However, the breeding of Camargue bulls is not a viable source of income, and only a handful of herdsmen live from it. The vast majority have one or more incidental activities, whether or not directly linked to breeding. Many turn to agricultural (domestic cattle breeding, production and sale of hay, cereals, or wine) or tourist activities (horseback riding, touring groups, receptions at the farm).
