The Normandy American Cemetery Memorial consists of a semi-circular colonnade with, at each end, a loggia containing maps carved in stone. They recount the different phases of the Normandy landings as well as the military operations in Western Europe up until 1945. A large bronze sculpture stands in the arch’s open area. The Memorial is built of limestone from Vaurion (Côte d’Or), with its plinths and steps made out of granite from Ploumanach (Bretagne). The loggias’ ceilings, tiled with blue ceramics, are the work of the firm Gentil and Bourdet, from Paris. Its floor is paved with pebbles collected from Omaha Beach, lying at the bottom of the cliff, and sealed with mortar.
