An endangered coastline

The fixed infrastructures of the Camargue coast require careful and constant protection in order to help prevent marine erosion in certain coastal sectors. Infrastructures such as the village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer or the protection dyke for the Giraud saltworks demand heavy and costly protection through riprap using groynes or dykes. The Camargue delta is under threat of being partially invaded by the sea during the next century. The current rise in sea level is between 0,07 and 0.2 inches (2 and 6 mm) per year, to which is added the sinking of the delta itself on its base (about 0,07 inches - 2 mm per year).
