A breeding ground for greater flamingos

Camargue - a vast area of islets and lagoons with shallow brackish waters rich in nutrients and relatively sheltered from humans - is the main permanent breeding ground for the greater flamingo (Phœnicopterus roseus) in the western Mediterranean. Very few sites provide suitable conditions for the nesting of this ecologically particularly specialized large wader. The flamingos of Camargue ponds sometimes move east to feed on the edges of the Bolmon or Berre ponds without, however, using them as nesting areas.
