The most imposing building erected in Western Europe during the Gothic period, the Palais des Papes continues to bear witness to the presence of the nine popes who succeeded one another in Avignon during the 14th century. The twenty-five rooms open to visitors allow them to familiarize themselves with the temporal and spiritual power of the papacy. They discover the palace's audience (rooms of the Grand Audience and of the Consistory) and ceremony and festivity places (Grande Chapelle Clémentine, Grand Tinel), as well as the private apartments of the popes and the terraces overlooking the Rhône.
