After its creation in 1971, Madine Lake was included in the Lorraine Regional Nature Park. Its waters extend in the Woëvre plain, whose clay soil sometimes reaches a depth of 328 ft (100 m). This vast area of marshes and forests was gradually dried up by the digging of channel and fish ponds between the 12th and 16th centuries. They were led by monks seeking to improve the salubrity of the region during the Middle Ages.
