A popular and vulnerable lake

Located at 7,309 ft (2,228 m) above sea level in the heart of the Mercantour National Park, Allos Lake is dominated by the limestone summit of Mont Pelat, which culminates at 10,009 ft (3,051 m). The largest natural high-altitude lake in Europe (133.5 acres/54 ha) is easily accessible in an hour's walk round trip from the Laus plateau car park in the municipality of Allos in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Hikers can walk around it in an hour and discover the Notre-Dame-des-Monts chapel erected on its banks. The site made very vulnerable by its altitude suffers from a significant summer attendance.
