An artificial lake created in 1959

The artificial lake of Serre-Ponçon is located in southeast France at the limit of the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments. It was created in 1959 by the construction of a dam on the Durance river, 1.2 miles (2km) downstream of its confluence with the Ubaye. The project aimed to regulate the floods of the impetuous river, irrigate Provence, and generate electricity.
