The Issenheim Altarpiece consists of eight limewood panels and ten sculptures. The choir of the chapel of the former Dominican convent in Colmar is entirely dedicated to it. Since the conversion of the convent into a museum in 1849, the altarpiece has been the centrepiece of the building. Presented unassembled, the 16th century work illustrates several episodes from the life of Christ and Saint Anthony the hermit. On ordinary days, the shutters were always closed: the Crucifixion scene is framed by Saint Sebastian, pierced by the arrows of his martyrdom, and by Saint Anthony, who is being frightened by a monster.
