Designed in 2013 by landscape architects Astrid Verspieren and Philippe Simonnet, the vegetable garden of Royaumont Abbey is close to the concept of permaculture. Such a system relies on the regeneration and natural reseeding capacities specific to each plant. Overall, the 2.2 acres (9,000 m²) plot accommodates 130 varieties of edible plants, 60 fruit trees, and 3,000 plants. It is also an informative area with educational signs and a space dedicated to calm and inspiration for artists.
