A small and discreet insect
The gray cicada (Cicada orni) has an average body length of 1.1 in (28 mm), reaching 1.5 in (39 mm) in total length, wings included, for a 2.9 in (74 mm) wingspan. Its brown and green body is covered with a pruinosity (waxy and slightly powdery layer) that makes it almost undetectable on trees bark. The end of its wing veins is punctually spotted with eleven black dots present on each of its front wings, a morphological feature characteristic of the species.
