Dedicated to the Niçois who died during the First World War, the Rauba-Capeù war memorial is one of the largest in France, with a total height of 104 feet (32 m). Labeled as a 20th Century Heritage in 2000 and winner of the first prize at the Urban Development Trophies in 2004, it was listed as a Historical Monument in 2011. Its large arched niche houses an urn containing the plaques of the 3,665 soldiers from Nice who died during the conflict. It is surmounted by two high reliefs sculpted by Alfred Janniot opposing the themes of war (left) and peace (right) and separated by a central inscription. A sundial 39 ft (12 m) in diameter is engraved on the ground.
