Located in Baie du Robert north of Petit Piton islet and near Chancel islet, La Grotte islet has been the subject of a biotope protection order since 2002, as are Boisseau, Chancel, Loup Garou, Madame, Petite Martinique, Petit Piton and Petit Vincent islets. This decree aims to protect the plant and animal species present on the uninhabited islet of 14 acres (5.7 ha). Among them, the site hosts, in terms of flora, the country mulberry (Maclura tinctoria). La Grotte islet's fauna, for its part, includes the anoli (Anolis roquet) and the land crab (Cardisoma Ganhumi), as well as an abundant avifauna of several species of hummingbirds, yellow-bellied sugarbush, yellow warbler, whistling elenie, blackbirds, etc. Any destruction or alteration of the islet's biotopes by trampling, uprooting, or removal of vegetation or substrate is prohibited.
