The Grand Hôtel de Cabourg stands at the center of the wide promenade that runs along the city's 2.2 miles (3.6 km) beach. It was inaugurated in 1907 by the Mayor and designer of the Grand Hôtel and its casino, Charles Bertrand. The Belle Époque and its frenzy for seaside resorts completed the prestige of this Italian-style building, whose balconies are lined with ironwork. During WWI, the hotel became a hospital center and later a residence for the Wehrmacht during WWII. Cabourg and its Grand Hôtel suffered little damage and were liberated by the Belgian armies in 1944.
