The harness of the Camargue horse is complex and centered around the Camargue saddle that appeared in France in the 13th century. Designed by the saddler to allow the rider to spend hours on horseback comfortably and with maximum safety, it rests on a felted carpet called a couverton. Attached to the cantle (rear section in the shape of a backrest) of the Camargue saddle is the crupper holding the saddle in place and preventing it from moving forward or twisting. Finally, a pad (porte chato) is placed under the crupper, behind the cantle, to protect the horse's loins. The set is completed with a whole series of straps and bridles.
