The Salettes fort (or redoubt) was designed in 1692 to occupy the Poët plateau overlooking Briançon on the right bank of the Durance in the Hautes-Alpes department. It was established between 1709 and 1712 at an altitude of 5,045 ft (1,538 m) on the first bends leading to the Toulouse cross. The fort consists of a square redoubt (tower) with canted sides surrounded by a ditch and a counterscarp gallery pierced with gun battlements. Its originality lies in the access to the gallery by an underground passage departing from the tower.
