A hastily built fort

The Royal Fort of Sainte-Marguerite Island owes its current appearance to the Marquis de Vauban. From 1682, Louis XIV’s minister initiated the improvements provided on the old fortress hastily built by Richelieu and urgently reworked after a Spanish siege. He transformed it into a powerful citadel adapted to the evolution of the artillery of the time. In order to improve the defensive capacities of the bastion, new embrasures were drilled for shooting and ditches were dug.
