Some 105 miles (170 km) long, the Orne crosses the Norman Switzerland. This part of Normandy, which alternates granite rocks, plains, and green forests, clings reliefs sometimes 984 ft (300 m) high to the banks of the river. Vegetation abounds everywhere in an area whose biodiversity is protected by the Natura 2000 network. The Orne constitutes a privileged area for the reproduction of salmonids (brown trout and Atlantic salmon). It is also home to pearl mussels, present only in some fifty French rivers and protected in Europe.
