A funding based on donations

The financial stability of the Hospices de Beaune and the sustainability of their charity activities have been possible thanks to the land estate that they have gradually built up through donations of houses, land, vineyards, as well as cash legacies. The first donation dates back to 1457, five years after the inauguration of the Hôtel-Dieu. It emanated from the widow of a glassmaker and included ten ouvrées (3,000 to 5,000 m²) of Beaune vines located in a place called Beaumont-le-Franc. It was followed by many other donations of vines, which enabled fundraising for the financing of charities through the sale of their production.
