The Cotentin donkey (Equus asinus) has been part of the Norman landscape ever since the Middle Ages. It was mainly used as a pack animal for the transportation of cow milk from the pastures to the farm, but it could also be harnessed to work in the crops. At the beginning of the 20th century, the donkey trade was a great success at the annual fairs of Lessay and Gavray, two Manche villages. Hundreds of donkeys from the Cotentin region were sent to other regions of France, and even abroad. Today, they are more used in green tourism to which their kindness and calmness are perfectly suited.
