The range of the jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) extends from the southern United States to Argentina. This easily tamed feline was used as a domestic cat by pre-Columbian populations. Its thick fur, relatively small but slender body (2.5-4.5 feet / 77-140 cm long, 0.9-1.3 feet / 30-40 cm tall at the withers, a weight between 6.6 and 19.8 lbs / 3-9 kg), small flattened head with rounded ears made it an ideal pet for indigenous peoples.
