The roof decorations of the Hospices de Beaune in the Côte-d'Or department were extensively restored and increased in the 19th and 20th centuries, notably with the addition of gargoyles (photo). Projecting parts of a gutter intended to channel the rainwater away from the walls, the carved stone or lead gargoyles are traditionally adorned with grotesque figures. They often take the form of animal gargoyles with a wide representation of lions and dogs or the hybrid and monstrous aspect of dragons evacuating water from their mouths.
