A newly divided pond

The Étang de Thau (Thau pond) in the Hérault department is an important shellfish production area. Since January 1, 2019, it has been divided into two sectors: Bouzigues Loupian and Mèze Marseillan. Such reorganization constituted a small revolution for this pond, whose shellfish farmers have been calling for the division for 15 years in order to avoid the complete closure of the area in the event of bacteriological contamination. A protocol has been signed between the French State and the professionals of the Étang de Thau. The oyster farmers, therefore, have their breeding tables in two sectors, thus imitating other oyster basins such as that of Arcachon or those of Brittany.
