The Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel consists of shelly sand and clay arranged in successive layers. They soften when walked on and become similar to quicksand. In addition, three rivers (Couesnon, Sélune, and See) flow into the vast estuary of Mont-Saint-Michel and roam at low tide by digging the Tangue that covers the foreshore.
