In 1462 the castle of Koenigsbourg was taken and destroyed after a siege. The Habsburgs recovered a ruined fortress that they could not afford to restore. In 1479, they decided to enfeoff the castle to one of their most loyal captains, Oswald de Thierstein. It is then rebuilt, enlarged, and modernized to be adapted to increasingly effective firearms. However, the Thiersteins encounter the same difficulties as their predecessors. They can only afford to maintain a small garrison on-site.
