A symbol of the Mediterranean coast

The barquette marseillaise is by far the most common fishing boat on the Mediterranean coast. It is part of the large family of wooden workboats, still well represented all around the Mediterranean basin, whether by the gozzi in Italy, the feluccas in Tunisia, the caiques in Turkey, or even the gourses in Nice and the pointus in Toulon. It appeared at the end of the 19th century in the Marseille region and quickly won the favor of fishermen, supplanting most of the other Provençal boats.
