The lac Noir is at the heart of the Ballons des Vosges regional natural park. Of glacial origin, it extends at the center of a granite cove and sits at an altitude over 3,000 ft (935 m). The lake's surroundings are home to many animal species. More than 70 varieties of birds, like the Grand Tétras, dwell there. The region is also a biotope for chamois, wild boars, deers, foxes, martens, or lynx. The area is under the protection of Natura 2000, whose purpose is to ensure the conservation of habitats and species.
