Although very busy, the Verdon Gorges became a protected natural site in 1990. Their environment makes them a particular ecosystem, home to rare species of flora and fauna. The Verdon Doradille (Asplenium jahandiezii), a little endemic fern and the Raiponce de Villars (Phyteuma villarsii), a campanulacea that grows on the limestone walls can be found there. Among the birds of prey, golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and Grand Dukes of Europe (Bubo bubo) cross paths with recently reintroduced Fauve Vultures (Gyps fulvus) and Monk Vultures (Aegypius monachus).
